Growing long hair… saying bye to curls.

*This is a post about hair care, skip altogether if not interested lol*

Like every journey I get on, I keep learning and unlearning new things, doing a lot of trial and error.

Three months ago I decided to heal and restore my hair’s health. Like many things I had going that were good in the past, I managed to destroy my hair as well (if you read my previous posts you’d know).

After years of bleaching, stress, dumb hairstyles (for my hair type) and seeing for the 24745 time my hair getting dry and damaged again last January, I decided to stop.

In order to grow longer, fuller hair I feel it’s necessary to let go of the blonde for a while (at least in my case), for the following reasons:

– bleach damages hair, period.

– my hair is fine and wavy: this means it gets tangled easily and bleach makes the tangles even worse + fine hair finer :-/

-hair ends break off even more easily when bleached, which kills hair length.

This is to show you how far back my bleaching started:

Somewhere in 2006

How bad it got after losing my hair on 3 different occasions:

Now I’m determined to get it right… which means, “let my hair be”, pretty much. Letting it be with even styling!

The past couple months I embraced my natural wavy/curly hair pattern, this has been fun and it has got me great results with some styling products, but…

Waves and curls
Messy but look at that defined curl pattern lol (Curl cream + diffuser)

…these looks were good for just a day, max 2. By the third day, if I didn’t brush my hair (didn’t want to brush the curls away), it’d be a total nightmare. On top of it, I go often outdoor, to the beach, in the wind, at the gym… I can’t NOT detangle daily, or I’d be left with dreads.

I deal with this all the times

So the wavy/curly look gotta go for now, till my hair is healthier and not so prone to knots.

This is my hair just air drying or from being in a braid (all pics are unfiltered), no styling:

Still wavy, less defined. Not mad about it… Definitely easier to brush through.

As of now, these are the products that are totally winning for me and adding back softness, structure and shine to my hair:

1) Bond builders (Living Proof triple bond complex and Redken acidic concentrate treatment are winners, K18 didn’t do so much for me, as well as Epres)

2) Scalp serum to strengthen follicles and lengthening hair growth phase (Kerastase Genesis, I use half dose of what suggested though)

3) Vitamins containing marine collagen like Viviscal.

I also use a good shampoo, deep conditioners, hair masks, leave in conditioners and hair oil religiously. I like to soak my ends in coconut oil before a hair wash as well.

It’s only been a few weeks now of no more styling my curls, back to brushing every day and my hair feels already so much silkier, healthier and more manageable, which is important to prevent further damage especially when trying to grow it.

So will see how it goes… it’s such a long journey but the more you know and learn, the better is only gonna get!

Bye for now 🙂
